REVIEW OF TALES FOR DELICIOUS GIRLS BY BARBORA KNOBOVA

Tales for Delicious Girls  is a collection of short stories that describes the authors experiences with dating.  What is a delicious Girl?
The Author defines it as:

D for daring.
E for Enchanting
L for loving
I  for inspiring
C for captivating
I for intriguing
O for outgoing
U for unique
S for sophisticated.

There were many chapters that were funnier than the next. My favorite story was “Woman, Man and Dog." I enjoyed the way she told the story about a "man" and how he did not understand or relate to the "dog". Dogs feel that they are the king or queen of the house and have rights in the house. The "man' did not understand that. Especially when the "man” wanted to read and the "dog" wanted to go to sleep. All of her stories, tell us to take care of ourselves, love ourselves and follow our dreams. The book was well written and easy to read. To all of you women who are out there dating, this is the book for you. You have to feel "Delicious" in all that you do in life. There are original illustrations that capture the essence of each story and are very unique. Enjoy the trailer for the book.

My Thoughts-

The book was an interesting and easy read. The information provided was based on the experiences of actual survivors and there was very little science involved.  I always thought that the back of a plane was the safest place to sit but according to the book the best place to sit is five rows from an exit. I will keep that in mind when I make my next airline reservation. The author is an excellent writer and he provides great examples of survival techniques. It is always good to keep calm in a bad situation, but can we? I recommend this book.

WHY WOMEN COMPETE WITH WOMEN

"Recently I had lunch with my friend Claire whom I’ve known since college and whom I hadn’t seen for a long time. We met in our favorite restaurant in order to finally discuss the latest news and talk about everything that had been happening in our lives. Claire arrived with a new haircut, in a new coat and visibly with a few pounds less. I complimented her on her looks and received a lecture on what a nuisance it was to buy new clothes in a different size and on how her breasts had disappeared together with her love handles, which was the reason why she was considering a plastic surgery.

During lunch, Claire talked mainly about herself, her trouble at work, about the nasty fight with her mom and about her new lover who was totally emotionally unavailable but she was on top of the world with him anyway. When she made a pause in the middle of her chatter to finish her chicken tortellini that were getting cold, I finally had a chance to get a word in. I happily told her the two biggest pieces of news. With the new medication I had put on a few pounds but after endless months full of doctors and tests I was feeling good, had lots of energy and was able to live normally again. And in the evening I had a date with my new male find, an incredibly sexy officer from government security.

I expected Claire to be excited about my news, curious about details, happy that I was healthy again and had a date with a man who made me feel butterflies in my stomach. But instead she looked at me critically and said that those few pounds I had put on really didn’t flatter me and that I should do something about it. And that security guy of mine definitely had to be totally emptyheaded as "a run-of-the-mill cop".

Sitting over the dessert, she also told me that my work was absolutely useless if for the last two weeks I had been working sixteen hours a day and that it was so not worth it. The new pair of jeans I was wearing were something she would never have bought because they were too wide for her taste. And unlike me, she would never have gone on holiday all the way to Australia because such a long flight was too tiring. And besides, Australia wasn’t anything special anyway. After lunch, in a nearby shop she criticised the belt I wanted to buy, and yelled at the shop assistant standing on the other side of the store that an M would be definitely too small for me and asked her to bring an L straightaway. After the two hours spent with Claire I was sick to death of her and in a lousy mood. Somehow I couldn’t understand what all that was about. In college, we were inseparable. We shared success and failure, excitement about new lovers and pain after break-ups, exams, theses, losses and discoveries, simply everything.

Openly, genuinely, honestly. And now the same Claire was trying to convince me that I was fat, impossible and that my life was worthless, unlike hers. I didn’t think Claire was right and I definitely didn’t get desperate over my own life. I was upset, because the woman I had known for ten years and whom I trusted unreservedly had pointlessly and absurdly criticized me only to prove that she was better off. To boost her ego at my expense.

To annoy me, spite me and maybe even hurt me.

Later when I thought about Claire I realized that our lives couldn’t have been more different. In college we were both in the same boat and were joined mainly by the effort to survive exams and last out until graduation.

But I started working while still in school, and after college I became a freelance translator. Claire treated herself to a long holiday and then she started to look for a job. She was convinced that everyone would be in ecstasy about her recently obtained degree and knowledge, and that employers would be one-upping each other to offer her the best paid job. Without practice and with a degree in a not really practical field she ended up as an assistant of a large company director and started to feel underrated. Instead of improving her qualifications and trying to get a job she’d always longed for, she prefers to sit at her assistant desk and complain about how much she hates her work, and that it’s not what she studied so hard for. While I took a mortgage and bought my own apartment, Claire, in a sudden independence fit, moved away from her parents and rented a tiny studio downtown that now costs her half of her monthly income. While I’m happy about my life and mostly do things that I enjoy, Claire focuses all her attention on searching for the future father of her children. On every first date with a new man she talks about the four lovely babies that she will have with him, and she doesn’t want to hear that this seduction strategy is a total flop."

REVIEW OF MOTHER DAZE BY CHRISTINE CARR

Have we mothers gone mad? From play dates and soccer games to music lessons and tutoring sessions, moms have got to do it all and still find time to do everything else. Christine Carr, mother of three, invites readers to join her on the refreshingly witty and fun recounting of her own MOTHER DAZE.

My review-

Being a mom of twins who are teenagers is not easy. When I read Mother Daze , I was quickly reminded of what I had to do to raise them. She discussed pregnancy, friendships, relatives, teachers, and husbands. There are days that I feel overwelmed and frustrated. The book was a breath of fresh air and I realized I was not the only one who was pulling my hair out.  If you want a great book to help you laugh again this is the book for you. Check out the interview with the author on TV.

REVIEW OF LOVE IN 90 DAYS BY DR DIANE KIRSCHNER

Love in 90 Days: The Essential Guide to Finding Your Own True Love by Dr. Diana Kirschner is great for the single lady out there. My daughter Melissa, asked me to read and review this book. I have been married for over 20 years, and I have been out of the dating scene for a long time. I found the information contained in the book realistic and very useful. If I was single looking for love, I would follow the information that she discusses.

The part I liked the most was when she talks about the Thirteen Deadly Dating Patterns in the beginning of the book. There are many women and men (yes, men have dating problems too) that have bad habits and the author has suggestions to help you break the cycle. The book was fun to read. I am passing this book on to one of my friends that is looking for love. There is also a web site that offers forums, workshops, articles and support. The site is http://www.lovein90days.com/. Check out the interesting video on one of the thirteen deadly dating patterns.

Disclosure: I was given a copy of the book by the publisher for review and was not compensated in any other way.

REVIEW OF FREE FROM PERFECT BY EILEEN PALAZZOLO

Free From Perfect by Eileen Palazzolo was born from the author's struggle with self-image, weight and eating habits that turned into eating disorders that affected her life.

In the book, she discusses key points that include-

• Control (or lack of control) and how it affects your eating habits.
• Happiness and self-esteem.
• Your body and how you perceive your body.
• Stress, overeating and willpower.
• Influences from commercialism (magazines, TV shows, celebrities and fads).
• Binge eating- Have you ever eaten a whole box of cookies and  never realized that you   did it? This topic is discussed fully in the book.
• Deterrents that prevent weight loss.
• Fear of failure.
• Mental well-being (self-forgiveness and acceptance of yourself.)
• Food and your desire to lose weight. (Dietary guidelines discussed fully.)
• Short and long term weight loss and maintenance goals.
• Exercise, cosmetic surgery and numbers.

The author ties all of these key points together in a program that combines the physical and mental aspects of losing weight. The author recommended keeping a journal and she has sections that ask you question about your feelings at that time. In reading the book, I found out things about myself that I was unaware of. I recommend that if you start any weight loss program you discuss it with your doctor especially if you have health issues. She also says that you must exercise. She included tips to help you stay motivated and feel good about your-self. The book was easy to read and I recommend it to anyone who needs assistance in their weight loss struggle.

About the Author-
Eileen has been running her"Free" program for several years in Southern NH where she is also a fitness and gymnastic instructor. After recovering from an eating disorder, she realized that she had to help others overcome  society's view of perfection. She is not a nutritionist, psychologist, physician or a physiologist but an ordinary person.

REVIEW OF THICKER THAN BLOOD BY C.J. DARLINGTON

In the book Thicker Than Bloodby C.J. Darlington there are two sisters Christy and May that are split apart after a tragic event that effects both their lives. Christy has many problems in her life and she turns to booze and cigarettes to help them all go away. When she is arrested for drunk driving she calls a coworker Vince and that is when her worst problems begin. She has to make a decision quickly in order to turn her life around. Christy has a secret that has haunted her for many years.

Christy's sister May works on a ranch and has been wondering what has happened to her sister. She has tried to contact her many times and has had no luck. Christy shows up one day and brings her problems with her. Christy learns the lessons of compassion and forgiveness that May teaches her. There is a lot of excitement that happens on the ranch especially when Vince starts coming around.

The book was well written. There were many different elements included in the book such as humor, suspense, mystery, emotions and Christian values. This was the author’s debut novel that was written when she was fifteen years old and I am very impressed. I hope that she continues to write, and I look forward to reading her next novel.

REVIEW OF FISH OUT OF WATER BY ABBY NYE

I just finished Fish Out of Water by Abby Nye. In this book the author discussed her experiences as a Christian student in a secular college. The topics she explored were tolerance, indoctrination and the political correct. The author supplied examples of her everyday occurrences while on campus. The use of emails written throughout the book showed that she was not alone and other students on the campus had the same difficulties.

I especially liked the part when her professor gave Abby a low mark on a paper because he disagreed with her viewpoint because she had written about her Christian views on the subject. He had said that they should write from their own viewpoint. She was upset about the grade and pursued it further. She never did get a better grade, but the professor viewed her differently in the future.

I asked my mother about her experiences in college. My mother attended a Catholic college and she does not remember having the same issues that Abby faced. I feel that this book would be very useful when entering college. I am aware that the information discussed is based on the opinions of the author and some people may not agree with her ideas. I am presently in high school and I will pass this book on to one of my Christian friends who is attending college in the fall. This was an impressive book. Although the book was written in 2005, the information is still very useful. Very good job Abby!

I received a copy of this book from New Leaf Press to review and did not receive any compensation for the review.
