Surrounded by accusations of espionage, kidnapping, murder, and refusing to become chattel, Taylen discovers she has the unique ability to see the doorways between realms. Leaving the Realm of Men behind, she enters the land of the fae-like Ays Shee. EXCERPT:

A curve in the road revealed hills covered with vineyards. The vines were mid-transformation, changing from their summer green to fall’s stunning array of deep golds and burnt reds.

“Now I’m in the vineyards.” Taylen sighed.

The road opened out, the trees moving away from the asphalt and stench of exhaust to perch atop hills or slip down their sides. They hovered in sparse clusters among the vineyards, distant reflections of the road-scape she’d just left.

“If you keep your pace,” Mom said, her voice warm with delight, “you’ll arrive the same time the brownies are coming out of the oven.”

“You made brownies?”

“Of course.” Mom laughed. “It’s been two months. You must be going through brownie withdrawal by now.”

“How’d you guess?” Taylen grinned.

The sun sank toward the hills on her left, coloring the few clouds in the sky with luminescent oranges and reds. Sunsets, like sunrises, were the best parts of the day. They were magical, a time in flux in which one thing merged into the next.

She glanced down to switch on her headlights. The glint of sunlight off the chrome trim running along the edge of her windshield caught her eye.

“Well—” The line in her ears went dead.

“Mom?” Her gaze flicked back up. The lights clicked on first in the dash, then on the tree ahead of her.

Tree!

She swerved right. More trees blocked her path. She flung the steering wheel left to avoid another, veering between tree after tree while careening through a brightly lit forest. Bushes broke and cracked under and against her car, creating a cacophony of breaking wood and screeching metal. The car bounced and jarred her to either side, the seatbelt catching her with bruising force.

Another tree appeared in her path, this one fallen over. She cursed and stomped on the brakes. The car spun left. A jarring thump and a loud bang signaled a back tire blowing out. A branch slammed into her windshield, cracking it.

She screamed as another branch shattered her passenger window when the car lurched sideways. A clearing in the trees beckoned ahead of her, then it was behind her, and a sickening weightlessness lifted her off the seat.

She had a moment to take in the view. A forest stretched out in all directions from around a large pear-shaped lake, its surface a dark reflective gray sheet. Gravity reclaimed her and her car, and she plunged toward the water below. Her shriek ripped through the air.

Author Bio:

L.A. is a fantasy fiction author. She scribes epic fantasies filled with adventure, mythical creatures, struggle, and the magic that can come from strong friendships, especially between females. Characters going through proverbial hell as they come into their personal power resonate the most with her and are what she writes.

For her, stories always arrive first as a single clear snapshot. Usually, the image is of a pivotal moment. After that, it’s like a portal has opened and L.A. is the conduit the story flows through, as opposed to the conductor of the tale. It often makes writing as exciting as reading.

After decades of migrating from one US coast to another and then abroad, L.A. has settled in the Pacific Northwest, U.S.A. with a couple of high-powered kids, a husband, two cats, chickens, and a flock of wild turkeys that have decided to make the family’s property theirs.

Review of An American Story: Everyone's Invited by Wilmer Valderrama (#Memoir)

I want to welcome Wilmer Valderrama to Books R US. Wilmer has recently published a memoir called An American Story: Everyone's invited. Thanks to the publisher, Harper Select, I received a copy to review.

Author: W. Valderrama

Publisher: Harper Select

Publication Date: Sept 17 2024

Genre: Biography, Memoir

The remarkable true story of a young immigrant from Venezuela who had a dream to change the world, a talent for entertaining, and a determined spirit to build a new life, taking as many as possible with him on the journey.

An American Story is the stirring memoir by actor, producer, and activist Wilmer Valderrama, delving into his upbringing in Venezuela where he was raised by two hard working parents as they navigated their family through a rapidly changing country and the rise of Hugo Chavez. With the economy crashing around them and their livelihood disappearing, the family decides to flee the country. Suddenly, the young boy who had loved riding his horse and dreaming of being Zorro from his favorite black and white tv show had to grow up quickly, journeying as a teenager from a tiny little pueblo in Venezuela to the big city of Los Angeles.

My Thoughts:

Wilmer's story was inspiring, authentic, compelling, and captivating. The book drew me in from the first page. It was easy to read, and Wilmer wrote from his heart. Despite being born in the USA, he faced numerous hardships that he had to overcome. English is a difficult language, and he had to adapt to a new culture and way of life because he lived in Venezuela until age 13. I never knew how difficult it was for an actor to gain popularity in the industry, but after reading the book, I now know how challenging it may be. Wilmer auditioned for numerous commercials and parts, but one major problem was, "This kid has an accent." Well, that accent helped him get the part as Fez. As I was reading, whenever that statement came up, I had to laugh because that did not hold him back, and he succeeded. I loved the book, and the section with the pictures tied the book together. Great Job, Wilmer!

Interview by George Mehok author of Going Dark (Book 1 in the Liberty Unit series) (#interview)

I want to extend a warm welcome to George Mehok at Books R US. Mr. Mehok is the author of "Going Dark," the first book in the Liberty Unit Series, which will be published on November 15, 2024, by Atmosphere Press. The author has graciously provided us with an interview, but first, let me give you a brief overview of the book.

About the Book:

From the shadowy corners of the dark web to the historic halls of MIT, Paul Knox, a cyber forensics expert and former Air Force officer, is thrust into a high-stakes battle against a ruthless enemy. As he races to uncover a plot that threatens to plunge America into chaos, Paul must protect his brilliant daughter, Emma, whose cutting-edge research holds the key to the nation's survival.

Interview:

Who or what was the inspiration for the book?

Becoming an author and deciding to write a novel was deeply inspired by my late father’s love of learning and reading, particularly smart, fast-paced thrillers with strong complex characters. He introduced me to titans in the thriller genre such as Stephen Hunter, Steve Berry, and Tom Clancy. We would read their books and spend hours discussing them—it was a special bond that I’ll always treasure.

My father was a decorated Air Force veteran who served honorably in the Korean War, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Paul Mehok, who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Their commitment to service and their dedication to protecting the freedoms many of us often take for granted had a profound impact on the characters I developed in GOING DARK. This influence is embodied in cyber forensics expert and Air Force veteran Paul Knox, as well as the strong female protagonists Emma Knox and Liberty Unit agent Lia. Additionally, the historical storyline centers around Captain John 'Jack' Jouett, who's fight for freedom against a seemingly invincible British force, led him to accept a dangerous mission into enemy territory to deliver a crucial encrypted message from Thomas Jefferson to General Henry Knox at the Fort at West Point.

Additionally, the tragic events of 9/11 left a lasting impression on me, as it did on my entire generation. I vividly remember where I was and the impact it had on those close to me. Raising awareness of modern vulnerabilities, particularly in our telecommunications and energy infrastructures, was another motivation behind this story. As an entrepreneur and technologist, I see firsthand how our enemies could and likely are targeting these weaknesses through both traditional and cyberwarfare methods, infiltrating data centers, government systems, and manipulating social media to spread chaos and disrupt our way of life, and potentially opening the door for a broader attack. This blend of real-world threats and personal experience drove the creation of GOING DARK.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

Writer’s block, to me, is more about pushing through the harder days than a total stop. I’ve found that sticking to a daily routine is key. Whether it’s writing, working, or exercising, consistency makes a difference. I write early in the morning, and it’s all about getting that first sentence down—even if I have to delete and rewrite it a few times. Once the words start flowing, the rest follows.

I don’t focus too much on perfecting the first draft of that day’s first page. The most important thing is to get my thoughts and emotions onto the page. The real magic then begins when I immerse myself in the world of my characters, and before long, the distraction of the day fades away. Writing transports me into another reality, and that’s when the story truly comes alive.

Can you tell me about your experience finding a publisher for the book?

As a debut author, navigating the publishing world was a learning curve. I was fortunate to receive advice from both successful self-published and traditionally published authors. Initially, I pursued the traditional route, querying dozens of agents and publishers. While I received great feedback, I ultimately chose to go with Atmosphere Press, a hybrid publisher that allowed me to maintain more control over the creative process.

Working with Atmosphere has been a fantastic experience. I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with a talented team—my editor, cover art designer, marketing team, and others. I’m thrilled with the final product and the level of input I’ve had along the way. It’s been an exciting journey, and I’m confident the partnership has resulted in a high-quality book that reflects my vision and will be entertaining for my readers.

What do you like to do for fun when you’re not writing?

When I’m not writing, I spend as much time as I can with my family. Whether we’re traveling, attending my twin daughters’ swim meets, or enjoying a day at Lake Erie, I treasure every moment. The north coast of Ohio and the shores of Lake Erie are some of our favorite places to relax, unwind and write.

Where do you like to go on vacation?

The Florida Keys are my favorite vacation spot—Key Largo, Islamorada, and Key West, to be specific. There’s something about the history, incredible fishing, the food, and laid-back atmosphere, not to mention the connection to artistic legends like Ernest Hemingway and Jimmy Buffet that always draws me back.

What are your current/future projects?

Right now, I’m focused on the marketing and pre-launch activities for GOING DARK, including interviews, scheduling events, and sharing advanced copies with readers. I’m also working on the audiobook production, which has been an incredible experience. John Marshall Media is producing it, with the talented voice actor Fleet Cooper bringing the story to life.

In addition, I’m writing the second book in the Going Dark - Liberty Unit Series. This time, Paul Knox’s brilliant mathematician daughter, Emma, takes center stage as she goes "dark" to uncover a plot to sabotage NASA and SpaceX efforts to establish a base on the moon. It’s a race against time to stop a foreign adversary’s sleeper spy in an international spy thriller.

Do you have any tips for young writers just starting out?

My advice for young writers is to follow your passion. Write about what excites you, and don’t be afraid to let that passion guide your work to places you didn’t anticipate. Also, find a writing community where you can share your experiences and learn from others. Writing can be a solitary journey, but having a support network can make all the difference. Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you—it’s an amazing community to be a part of.

If your book were to be made into a movie, who would you like to play the main character and why?

I haven’t given it too much thought, but I’d want someone who could capture the intelligence, intensity and emotional depth of Paul Knox, my main character. Paul is both an expert marksman and a cyber forensics expert, so I’d imagine someone such as Chris Pine, who played Jack Ryan in Shadow Recruit, would be a great fit. Or Ryan Gosling, who portrayed the cool and calculated Court Gentry in The Gray Man, could also be an excellent choice. Both actors have shown they can handle complex, high-stakes characters like Paul.

In the novel's revolutionary historical storyline, Captain John "Jack" Jouett is a rugged war hero—a 6'4", 220-pound force of nature. So naturally, I’d cast Chris Hemsworth. I mean, who else could convincingly pull off outrunning the British on horseback while also looking like a Marvel superhero? Hemsworth has that perfect mix of brawn and charm, and let’s be honest, if anyone’s going to make a 40-mile midnight ride through the backwoods in the dark of night, it's him. Plus, if Jack’s mission is to stop the capture and assassination of the future president, General George Washington. Chris could do that perfectly with some Thor-level acting…

Book Blitz of Love in Overtime by Melissa Baldwin (# Contest- Win an Amazon Gift Card)

Love in Overtime
Melissa Baldwin

(Love on Thin Ice)

Publication date: September 19th 2024
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance, Sports

Playing hockey in Maple Falls was meant to be just a charity gig, but then my new publicist showed up, melting the ice—and my heart.

Cooper

I never anticipated being roped into a charity hockey game during the off-season. But here I am, heading to Maple Falls, all because my publicist decided to retire. Change was inevitable, but I didn’t foresee it coming so soon.

Getting assigned a new publicist, Blair Radcliffe, didn’t sit well with me at first. However, there’s something about her – a fierce determination that’s both intriguing and challenging. I wonder if she’s ready for the whirlwind that is Cooper Montgomery. One thing’s certain– I can’t afford to fall for my publicist.

Blair

I still can’t believe I landed my dream job. The excitement is overwhelming, and I’m determined to carve out my path in the industry. But there’s one obstacle standing in my way– Cooper Montgomery, the seemingly uncooperative hockey star. Nevertheless, I’m ready to tackle the challenge head-on, and perhaps some time away in a quiet town like Maple Falls will work wonders.

What I didn’t anticipate was developing a crush on my own client. It’s the ultimate taboo in my profession, a mistake that could jeopardize everything I’ve worked for. I’m at a loss on how to navigate this newfound attraction, especially when it appears that Cooper might feel the same way. I’m not sure what to do next.

Love in Overtime is part of the Love on Thin Ice sweet small town hockey romcom series. It’s slow burn, grumpy-sunshine, workplace romance set in this small town with all the sizzle and chemistry, but none of the spice.

EXCERPT:

“Today should be relaxing,” I tell him. “At some point I want to have a meeting to go over a few things. Practices start in a few days, as you know.”

“Yes,” he says.

“It’s going to be a great event,” I continue. “And the town is so pretty and quaint. Their fall events are popular, they’ve made the place famous.”

Cooper makes a face. “I doubt Pine Falls is famous.”

Maple Falls,” I say with a giggle. For some reason he can’t remember the name of the town.

He groans. “Crap, you’re right. I don’t know why I keep doing that. You’ll have to keep me on my toes over the next few weeks. The last thing I need is to meet the mayor and call his town by the wrong name.”

“Oh, don’t you worry, I’ll definitely keep you on your toes,” I exclaim.

“Yes, I can tell,” Cooper replies, the corner of his mouth turns up slightly which unexpectedly makes my stomach do a flip.

Ugh. What was that?

Thankfully we arrive at the baggage carousel at the perfect moment. I conveniently excuse myself to contact our driver while Cooper waits for his bag. As soon as I’m a safe distance away from him, I let out an exasperated sigh as I call for our car.

“Hello.”

“Hi, this is Blair Radcliffe. Just confirming our pickup at the airport.”

I glance back to where Cooper is standing and meet his gaze almost immediately. I give him a quick wave and point to the phone.

“Yes, ma’am. Your driver is on his way—ETA ten minutes.”

“Wonderful. Thank you,” I gush.

I exhale slowly after I end the call. I’m not sure why I feel so frazzled. I’m usually calm, focused, and professional.

Seriously, Blair, get your head in the game. Cooper Montgomery may be attractive, but he’s my client, which means we work together. These next few weeks could make or break my career. The last thing I need is to be swooning over a professional hockey player and his tall, muscular physique. In my defense, it’s kind of hard to ignore. Cooper stands out, and I’m only human.

Review of the Book The Man in Black and Other Stories by Elly Griffiths (#review)

I want to welcome Elly Griffiths to Books R Us. Elly is the author of numerous novels that include The Ruth Galloway Mysteries, The Brighton Mysteries and other works. She recently published a collection of short stories called "The Man in Black." The Book will be available on October 15th.

About the Book:

Elly Griffiths has always written short stories to experiment with different voices and genres as well as to explore what some of her fictional creations such as Ruth Galloway, Harbinder Kaur, and Max Mephisto might have done outside of the novels. The Man in Black gathers these bite-sized tales all together in one splendid volume.

In the title story, Ruth Galloway crosses paths with a mysterious man in a bookstore, setting in motion a rescue mission that hinges on the legends and lore of Norfolk.

Looking into the past, a young magician in 1920s Leeds wonders just what happened to his missing landlady in “Max Mephisto and the Disappearing Act.”

In “Justice Jones and the Etherphone,” a witty girl detective investigates the dire prediction of a fortune teller in dreary postwar London.

A flashback in time reveals Harbinder Kaur as a Detective Sergeant surviving her first day on the job at Shoreham DCI.

To celebrate the holidays, Ruth gets her very first Christmas tree, and her beloved cat narrates his own seasonal story in “Flint’s Fireside Tale.”

And readers can armchair travel with stories set on the Amalfi Coast, in Capri, and in Egypt as Ruth and DCI Nelson experience their very own version of Death on the Nile.

The Man in Black illustrates the breadth and variety of Elly Griffiths’s talent for blood-chilling, page-turning stories all with her trademark humor and heart.

My Thoughts:

I recently had the opportunity to review "The Man in Black," a collection of stories by an author whose other works I haven't read. The book features a mix of themes, including mystery, magic, ghost stories, Christmas traditions, and tales of love and loss. While I didn't enjoy every story, one highlight for me was "Flint's Fireside Tale," which offered a unique perspective by being told from the point of view of Ruth Galloway's cat. This story made me smile and wonder what my cats might think when I interact with them. However, I felt that I would have better understood the characters' backgrounds if I had read some of the author's other novels.

Thanks for stopping by.
