Teresa and I often made love, though never in the flesh. To this day the psychiatrists will scrutinize such a statement as if it meant something other than what it plainly says, as if it were the telltale boil of some rare mental pox that might explain the blood spills photographed by the police. But these doctors do not understand love, optics, metaphysics, error, or even good taste. As far as flesh went, I never touched or even talked to Teresa, not until our moral decline had already begun. Before then, seeing the chaste tables that divided us in the Columbia library less than a decade ago, in the middle years of the 1990s, you might have thought Teresa and I were strangers, that she didn’t know I was alive.

I first saw her early in my junior year, a new female sitting several tables away in the Burgess-Carpenter reading room on the fourth floor of Butler Library. She seemed at first like any other of the pretty women on campus whom I liked to ogle and who regarded me as if I were invisible. But the more I stared at her, the more she particularly interested me. A pile of books rested near her elbow on the blond pine table, her head bent with rapt attention over her open book. Hazy September sunlight from the tall windows bathed her small breasts in her magenta top, made the white skin of her forearms glow. Her dark-brown hair was long and luxuriant, her neck long, her face shaped like that of a Raphael Madonna. But what captured me most were her eyes—large, sad eyes, ringed with mauve circles as if she hadn’t slept well. Why was she sad? Was there something I could do to make her happier?

We sat like that for a long time, she near the east end of a table in the back, never noticing me, while I shot frequent glances at her from near the west end of the second table from the door. About twenty feet diagonally divided us, too far for me to discern her eye color, though I tried. Finally, she got up, gathering her books into a white canvas tote bag and walking toward the door. As her gangly frame passed me, I gave her eyes a good look and saw they were hazel, flickering elusively under their long lashes from green to brown to gold.

The thought of her big, sad, long-lashed hazel eyes kept me happy for the rest of my day at Columbia. Even when I boarded the downtown Number One train, the first of the three trains that every evening buried me back in Jamaica, Queens, I was still thinking of those eyes. But an hour and fifteen minutes in the subways will discourage anyone. By the time I left the second leg, the D train, for the final and longest leg, the F, my thoughts were turning dark. The train was crowded with smelly, loam-colored laborers imported from faraway continents, and me just one of the horde.

Most students at Columbia boarded, but because my family was poorer than that of the standard Ivy Leaguer, I was a commuter. Combined with my natural tendency toward solitude, this meant I had no friends either on campus or anywhere else. I longed to make contact with someone, anyone, but did not know how. Sometimes I just wanted to pet them—the young secretary sitting before me on the subway in vinyl jacket and glittery eyeliner—to touch her shoulder, her pulsing throat, and say, “I am here. I am lonely. Help me.” Sometimes I wanted to hit them—the goon in the Yankees cap. When I felt particularly desperate, I wanted to stab them. I had knives that would have fit that purpose, but I never took them out of the house.

My Thoughts:

"Crooks" is an excellent novel. Each section of the book is written like a novella, following the lives of the Mercurio family as they navigate life's challenges. The novel is fast-paced, descriptive, engaging, and well-developed. Each member of the family's life is explored in depth, showcasing their individual experiences and struggles. The ending was rushed but enjoyable. I look forward to reading the other books that the author has written. 5/5 stars.

 Interview: 

1. Where do you get your inspiration? 

I’ve always loved stories from books or movies. My taste in genre is not specific. I like stories that develop characters who later become connected to the plot with pace that keeps my interest as well as my anticipation.

2. Favorite quote (doesn’t matter the source).

 I just finished watching To Have and Have-not, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. At one point while she is leaving the room, she turns and smiles and tells Bogie how he can find her if he wants to. “Just whistle. You know how to whistle, don’t you? Just put your lips together and... blow!”

3. What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book(s)? 

I begin with a few thoughts about a plot and then consider the characters that might fit inside of it. From that point on, my characters take over, carrying me from a hook right into the next inciting incidents. By now, the story has its own life, and I find myself as anxious. as I hope the reader becomes, to ride it all the way over the finish line.

4. When did you first consider yourself a writer? 

While working in my career jobs, I often attended writer classes at night, some at Elmhurst University or College of DuPage. One such opportunity happened after I signed up to attend such instructions from a published author. Along with twenty-four other wannabees, we met at his Chicago apartment twice a week for three months. On one occasion, he gave us an instruction to “free-think write” ( he called it). There were only twenty minutes remaining for the class. Anything goes, no rules, just write. I wrote about a man walking under a midnight moon, seemingly lost and becoming desperate. As he walked aimlessly through the forest, he spotted a small house that appeared vacant except for one, dimmed light coming from behind a shade covered narrow window. It frightened him and he considered turning back rather than approaching any further. Curiosity pushed aside the timid concerns. He continued until he arrived and was able to hear sounds that caused his heart to beat beyond control. He inched up from under the window...and.....TIMES UP – Pencils down!! Class was ended. At our next session the author/teacher announced that he would read only one of our stories. He read mine and then asked for the class to offer their thoughts about it. The first to speak was a young attorney from Sidley Austin who said that the only thing he could say was that he wished that he had written it. A few heads nodded agreement, the author/teacher smiled, and... I felt discovered!

5. What do you hope your readers take away from A Table Rock Mystery? 

I hope my readers feel rewarded by the telling of the story that was hidden behind the scenery that prompted their visit to this Ozark wonderland.

Ronnie Matarese felt a darkness descend upon him, even as he understood that it had always been there, pouring out from those eyes behind the sunglasses and into his apartment. A darkness as indifferent and as cold as the one that had greeted him when he’d returned home. A darkness that feared no light and could not be reasoned with. A darkness that was neither happy nor sad but just was.

Bobby “The Machete” Bonetti had not visited Ronnie to warn him or give him a beating. He had come to kill him. Ronnie suddenly knew this as surely as he was sitting there, and he was both terrified and furious that he hadn’t realized it sooner, when he still might have had a chance to escape. Ronnie searched Bobby Bonetti’s sunglasses but saw only murder in the smudge of his reflection, light and shadows on a face that looked like a skull. This was not the way he was supposed to go out, sniveling on his bed like a pussy and not knowing why. And thatwas the hardest part. Not knowing why. Not knowing what he had done—no, not had done but would do. And just as quickly as the darkness had descended, Ronnie saw a light. It was faint at first but coming fast, like when he was speeding through the cross-harbor tunnel up in Boston.

“You said you were here because of something I would do,” Ron- nie said, making no attempt to hide the desperate, trembling hope in his voice. “Not because of something I did but because of something I would do. That’s what you said, right? What is it? Tell me what you think I’m gonna do, and I swear on the souls of my dead parents that I won’t do it. Please, I’m begging you, Mr. Bonetti. You have my word.”

“I would give anything to have that kind of silence again,” Bobby said. “A silence so precious that, when it’s broken, it stings you like a box of bees.”

Then Bobby shot him.

 MY THOUGHTS:

"Muzzle the Black Dog" is a novel filled with secrets, suspense, confusion, and multiple timelines that draw readers into the story. The main character, Jack, is visited by a mysterious man who seems to know his life history and name. This enigmatic figure reappears throughout the narrative, adding to the confusion and leading me to question whether he is real or just a hallucination. Jack had a troubled past that led him to depression and hardship. Initially, I had difficulty following the plot, but everything came together as I continued reading. Several secondary characters played vital roles in weaving the narrative together. Overall, I enjoyed the book, and the ending was entirely unexpected.

 

 Author Bio:

Mike’s body of literary work includes both fiction and nonfiction, short-form and long-form, as well as articles and blogs.

He is the author of three published novels, Dead Beckoning, The Devil You Knew, its sequel You Will Know Me by My Deeds, and Muzzle the Black Dog, a novella. He is also working on Kathleen, a fictionalized account of a cold case murder from 1970.

While he is comfortable playing across a broad range of topics, much of his focus is on true crime, crime fiction, and historical fiction. Rigorous research is foundational to his writing. He gets that honestly, having spent much of his professional career as a scientist.

The Real-Life Inspirations Behind The Perfect Mother

When I first started writing The Perfect Mother, I had no idea just how personal this story would become. At its core, it’s a psychological thriller—a tale of secrets, obsession, and the devastating consequences of a single choice. But beneath the suspense, it’s also a story about motherhood in all its messy, complicated, and deeply emotional forms. And in many ways, writing it forced me to confront my own evolving relationship with motherhood.

Dawn: The Mother Who Lost Dawn’s story is, without question, the emotional backbone of this book. The pain of losing a child, of not knowing where they are, if they’re safe, or if you’ll ever see them again, is a nightmare no parent should ever have to face. And while Dawn’s experience is extreme, the themes of loss, guilt, and relentless determination were ones I found myself deeply connected to.

For a long time, I wasn’t sure if motherhood was for me. I spent years convincing myself that I didn’t need it, that I was perfectly happy without it. But deep down, that wasn’t the full truth. My fears of not being enough, of repeating generational cycles, of wanting something I might never have, shaped how I viewed motherhood. Her character was inspired by real-life cases of long-term child abductions, particularly those where the kidnapper managed to convince themselves (and sometimes even the child) that they were the true parent. There’s something chilling about that level of self-delusion, about the way a person can rewrite reality to fit their own desires. And yet, Evelyn’s fears of losing control, of being exposed, of having everything she built fall apart… they’re all deeply human.

I also pulled from my own experiences of stepping into motherhood later in life. The fears Evelyn has about being judged, about not being seen as a “real” mother, about the crushing weight of expectation are ones I understand, though in a very different context. Evelyn is an extreme case, but the fear of not measuring up as a mother is something so many of us can relate to.

Daniel: The Child Caught in the Middle Daniel’s story was, in many ways, the hardest to write. The idea of having your entire reality ripped away from you—the people you trust, the history you believe is yours, the truth about who you are—is terrifying. And while I personally haven’t experienced anything like Daniel’s ordeal, I thought a lot about identity while writing him.

What happens when those narratives are disrupted? When everything you thought was true turns out to be a lie? 

That’s the core of Daniel’s journey, and it’s something I think so many of us, in one way or another, can understand.

I love thrillers. I love stories that keep you on edge, that make you second-guess everything. But I also love stories with emotional depth, ones that don’t just entertain but make you feel. With The Perfect Mother, I wanted to craft a page-turner that also explored the deep, raw complexities of motherhood. The love, the fear, the sacrifice, and the desperate, all-consuming need to hold on.

This book may be fiction, but the emotions? The struggles? The questions it raises about what it really means to be a mother?

Those are real.

And I hope that as readers turn the pages, they feel that too

Desiree Moodie has been writing since before she could talk — seriously. As a kid, she spent weekends scribbling on notebook paper and stapling the pages together into makeshift books.

My Thoughts:

 

I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. Although I haven't read the first book in the series, "All We Buried," I had no trouble following the storyline. "A Cold Cold World" can be read as a standalone novel and is both fast-paced and thrilling.
In this book, Sheriff Bret Rivers faces several significant challenges: a dead body, a snowstorm that complicates her investigation, and a deputy whose wife is nine months pregnant. 

 

What’s a girl to do? She must solve the mystery quickly, with the assistance of her dog, Schweitz, her office manager, Alma, her deputy, Clayton, and other characters who enrich the story.
If you enjoy cop mysteries, this is the book for you. I look forward to reading the next installment in the series and other novels written by the author.
