Food: Your Passport to the World
I’ve always believed that food is the most delicious way to travel. You don’t need a plane ticket to explore the pyramids of Egypt, wander the markets of Morocco, or share a steaming bowl of ramen in Japan. You just need a kitchen, an open mind, and a good recipe. When I created the Spartan & the Green Egg graphic novel series, the adventures took my characters all over the globe. They learned about cultures, traditions, and faraway landscapes. But as much as I loved those journeys, I kept thinking: how can readers taste the adventure? That’s when the idea for The Explorer’s Cookbook was born.
For me, cooking has always been about curiosity and connection. Every dish tells a story, of the people who make it, the land that grows its ingredients, and the traditions passed down through generations. One bite of a spicy Caribbean stew or a delicate French pastry can be like stepping into another world.
With The Explorer’s Cookbook, I wanted families to have a way to bring those worlds into their own homes. The recipes are simple enough for kids to help with, but flavorful and authentic enough to give everyone a real taste of another culture. And because I believe food is just as much about learning as it is about eating, I included cultural tidbits and fun facts with each dish, so every meal becomes both a culinary and educational adventure.
You don’t need a passport to explore the world. You just need a grocery list and a dash of courage to try something new. Making homemade pasta can transport you to Italy, rolling sushi can bring you to Japan, and baking flatbreads can take you straight to the Middle East.
My hope is that this cookbook inspires families to see food as a bridge to understanding and appreciating our world’s diversity. In times when travel isn’t always possible, the kitchen can be the gateway to adventure.
So open the book, choose a recipe, and let your table be the place where stories, flavors, and cultures meet. Your passport is waiting, right there on your counter.
Born along the sun-kissed shores of the Mediterranean and raised amid the rich cultures of Europe, Nabila Khashoggi blends global inspiration with entrepreneurial passion. She founded NABILA K, a lifestyle brand offering skincare, makeup, home ambiance, and products that celebrate indulgence and well-being.
Nabila sparked her young son's imagination with fantastical bedtime tales of a boy and his adventurous friends traveling the globe inside a living green egg — a whimsical extraterrestrial guide. These enchanting narratives blossomed into Spartan and the Green Egg, a colorful children's graphic novel and chapter-book series that introduces young readers to environmental stewardship, cultural diversity, and the wonders of our world.
