GUEST POST BY MICHAEL YOUNG AUTHOR OF THE LAST ARCHANGEL

I want to welcome Michael Young to Books R Us. Michael is the author of the Book The Last Archangel. Thanks for stopping by.

Five Essentials to Pack for Your Writer’s Journey

1.   Patience. Pack it first and pack a lot of it.  Vacuum pack it so that you can fit more of it in.  If you don’t have it, or you can’t get it, writing may not be the journey for you.  The truth about writing is that there are no overnight successes.  Even those authors, who seem to spring up from nowhere and nets millions of sales and a movie deal, didn’t just churn the novel out after dinner the previous day. The process of brainstorming, writing, revising, submitting (and submitting some more) can take years to complete.

2.   Humility. Once you have something in print, it may come as a shock that not everyone is going to like it.  Some people will tell you this with tact and others will be just about as rude as possible.  You’re going to have all sorts of well-meaning people give you their opinions on your writing.  You need to be prepared to take it all in gracefully without losing your mind or punching a wall.

3.    Hard Work. Pack the work gloves and the tennis shoes. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to give it your best shot. It will be long days of work to brainstorm, to write, to revise, to submit, and the work doesn’t end once you finally churn out a manuscript.  Marketing your work has become increasingly important, and will require even more effort out of you in order to be successful.

4.    Flexibility. It takes many people to make a book and you as the author are only one of them.  When publishing traditionally, there are many other peoples from the editors to the cover designers. If you want to build a reputation of being someone publishers want to work with, you are going to have to pack quite a bit of flexibility.  Things aren’t always going to go exactly as you envisioned, and you need to learn how to take this professionally and allow others with a large financial stake in your writing to do what they professionally.

5.     Good Humor.  If you only have room for one thing, make sure you pack good humor. The writer’s journey is full of bumps and disappointing days.  It is also filled with thrilling moments and great days that come after much work, and many days of solitude without receiving any recognition. If nothing else, you’ll need a good sense of humor to get you through when you’re going over a manuscript for the 13th time or get a stack of rejection letters in one day.
